These two simple words are the foundation of any good piece of speculative fiction.
What if aliens invaded our planet? What if fossil fuels ran out and society was forced to reorganize? What if machines rose up and enslaved humanity?
Speculative fiction has a long history of using those two short words to create worlds of danger and disaster. But the phrase "What if?" is pregnant with more possibilities than zombie apocalypses and dystopic technological tyrants. "What if?" is a question most people ask themselves on a daily basis.
What if we had enough money to pay the rent this month? What if I had been a better friend to him? What if the world wasn't full of injustice? What if I finally felt empowered to do something about it?
My stories exist at the intersection of these two avenues of questioning. I am concerned with futuristic and fantastic worlds and the people who inhabit them: their realities, griefs, and triumphs.
